One of the most common questions fellow coffee lovers have is "What it the best way to store my coffee"? After all, we want the next cup to be as good as the first after we just opened a new bag of freshly roasted coffee. That aroma! To die for!
Heat. Moisture. Light. These are the three enemies of keeping your coffee fresh!
From a decade's experience of roasting, tasting, grinding and storing coffee, I can recommend the following methods.
If the coffee bag is unopened and sealed, it is best stored in the refrigerator. This appears to slow down the rate of decline of freshness. It is most noticeable for dark roasts where the coffee oils naturally come to the surface sooner, creating that "oily" shine.
IMPORTANT - if stored in the fridge, allow the bag to warm up to room temperature before opening. This will stop condensation from air humidity forming on the beans and robbing the beans of some freshness.
I recommend not returning the bag to the fridge, but storing the coffee at room temperature in an airtight container, away from heat, moisture and light. At the very least, wrap the bag up tightly and use a clip or elastic band to push excess air out. Then store in a cool, dark cupboard.
However, for those environments having high humidity like hot tropical climates or a hot commercial kitchen, it may be best to store in the fridge in an airtight container.
To keep coffee fresher, all our bags have a one-way valve incorporated into the design. For a few days after roasting, coffee releases small amounts of carbon dioxide, which in a sealed bag, pushes the oxygen out of the one-way valve. This keeps the coffee fresher. Furthermore our 150g, 250g and 500g bags all include a zip lock seal to help keep the coffee fresh.
Of course, there is no better way to enjoy delicious fresh coffee than getting it soon after being roasted. And having a careful roast using quality A grade beans with a uniform structure free of defects.
